Across two experiments we demonstrate that 10-month-old infants spontaneously encode the manner of different goal-directed actions (jumping over an obstacle vs. detouring around it, Experiment 1) and use the principle of cost-efficiency to infer their relative costs (jumping is less costly to bypass low walls, but detouring is less costly to bypass high walls, Experiment 2). By relating action choices to the physical parameters of the environment, infants identify the least costly actions given the circumstances, which allows them to make behavioral predictions in new environments and may also enable them to infer others' motor competence.enginfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessaction interpretationcognitive developmentinfancyrational actionArtificial IntelligenceComputer Science ApplicationsHuman-Computer InteractionCognitive NeuroscienceTen-month-olds infer relative costs of different goal-directed actionsConference paperhttp://www.scopus.com/inward/record.url?scp=85139465284&partnerID=8YFLogxKhttps://cognitivesciencesociety.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/cogsci20_proceedings_finalupdated.pdfPomiechowska, B & Csibra, G 2020, 'Ten-month-olds infer relative costs of different goal-directed actions', Paper presented at 42nd Annual Meeting of the Cognitive Science Society: Developing a Mind: Learning in Humans, Animals, and Machines, CogSci 2020, Virtual, Online, 29/07/20 - 1/08/20 pp. 391-396. < https://cognitivesciencesociety.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/cogsci20_proceedings_finalupdated.pdf >conferenceORCID: /0000-0002-7044-3056/work/1775258916491509111
